Texture and Travel

This summer, I was lucky enough to travel to Israel for the first time. TelAviv is one of the cities I was able to experience. This photo was taken outside the Suzanne Dellal Center, which for those of you who love Batsheva Dance Company will know this is where their home studios are. This is the main courtyard to the entrance of the theaters. It was midday, and it struck me how crisp the shadows were on the ground. I was so capture by the texture, that I did not realize what was making the shape, at first. I just assumed there were umbrellas overhead. There was a street in Jerusalem covered in umbrellas, just like there is in many cities around the world. I assumed overhead was nothing more spectacular than what I saw on the ground. When I looked up, I realized the umbrellas were actually dancer legs wearing tutus. How appropriate! :) I do not think I have ever seen such an exact edge on a texture found in "nature", it's a city but you get what I mean. The shadows show the zig zag edge of the tutus overhead, which is pretty amazing. The sun just happened to be in the perfect place and the focal points lined up just right, to create such a fun texture on the ground. The ground has impressively evenly placed polka dots. I appreciated the whimsy and fun of this design and how it interacted with the sun throughout the day.

Instructor Blogging Instructions

Welcome to the Dance 287 Journal for Fall 2018.

As artists we all see the world in different ways but we all incorporate out surroundings into our art.

To help understand lighting in a new way, these blog posts aim to increase your appreciation for light, in your daily life, and expand your vision as an artist.  They will also help develop your eye for light, not just in the theatre, but in your daily life.

In order to more effectively understand how light can alter the perception of the audience; we need to first understand how it alters our perception on a daily basis.

As we move through the quarter, I hope that this blog will help you to discover light in ways that you have not seen before.

Perhaps you'll see colors you've never noticed before, you may recognize the angle of a certain light, and you will find ways to articulate how a light makes you feel.

In order to assist with this process, I've created this blog so that all of you may contribute a short piece each week on an aspect of light that you have noticed throughout your journeys.

This can include a beautiful sunset, a great rock concert, a well lit store, or just what happens to your emotions when the sun moves behind a cloud. Anything and everything can be included.

Postings count towards your final grade.

Include photos or videos with your post to help us see what you are describing.

Whether or not you continue in lighting design after this class, I hope that this online journal will help you to discover inspiration for your art in daily life.

Many blogs will have guided topics (prompts).  Please refer to blog assignment for topics.

Please start your title for each posting with the Week # of the quarter, a subject line, and also include the prompt in the title if there is one for that week.

Thank you and Happy Blogging!!
